Week 21

Hiccup City

If you have decided not to find out if you are carrying a boy or girl, you may have been hounded by loving family members and friends with various old wives tales that may reveal the secret. From what you eat to how high or low you carry, there are old myths that can be fun to entertain. Even if you do know what you are likely carrying, these myths can be fun comparison points!

Many women enjoy looking at the Chinese Gender Chart as well, look it up online!

Look at You Now:

Are you feeling little rhythmic “thumps” that last for around a minute at a time? These often feel too fast to be kicks and confuse women, but they are hiccups! This is completely normal, so take them as growing signs from your little one.

You may be experiencing aches in your legs common to the second trimester. This again is normal, so prop up your feet every chance you get. Support hose can also help some.

Look at Baby Now:

The skin is still layering and the organs and central nervous system are still maturing. Growth is still steady but may slow some from previous weeks. Your baby is still moving around and may start kicking in uncomfortable places, such as up under your ribs! It is common for babies to press their heads under the ribs as well, but rest assured that soon the little one will turn their head down and bring relief.

The digestive system will start to function a little around this time. The intestines will start to slowly contract and relax and the swallowed amniotic fluid will be helpful with this development.

Tips for Now:

Most women will develop stretch marks from the stretching of the skin across the stomach and pelvic area. If you are noticing the lines it may be worth it to try some of the creams and lotions on the market aimed at reducing or preventing them, but not all women find success with these products. Some women swear by cocoa butter, and lotion up a couple times a day.

If you are among the women who bear their scars with motherly pride, then taking pictures of your pregnant belly for future memories may be a fun activity!
