| Week 18 Baby Revealed Within the next few weeks you will likely have an ultrasound. You may have had one earlier on, but this is the most exciting time to take a peek. The heart is now developed enough that it can be checked for any defects, but the genitals can also be clearly seen! If you want to know what you are having, it is likely to be revealed during this ultrasound. Some babies will squeeze their legs together or turn in positions that make it hard to tell what they have down there, so there is the chance it may not be accurately determined. Remember, there is always the chance that the gender determined during the ultrasound will turn out to be incorrect upon birth. This ultrasound will also determine if your due date is accurate or may need to be changed. Technology has made seeing your baby even more exciting. Ask your doctor about 3D ultrasounds available in your area. Look at You Now: You have probably gained around 10-15 pounds at this point. This varies from woman to woman, but if you are way below or above this range you may discuss your weight progress with your doctor. As you start to show more and more, you may find it more difficult to find comfortable sleeping positions. Tossing and turning all night does not have to be your fate if you get a little creative. Make sure you lie on your side so the blood does not get cut off to your heart, and make sure you use the bathroom before you lie down. Having a lot of pillows on your bed, couch, and anywhere else you may want to take a rest can help maneuvering into the best positions. Look at Baby Now: Get the baby book and little birth pillows ready because you little one is developing his fingerprints! The pads of his fingers and toes are now in place and the prints are coming along as well. The bones continue to solidify and fat deposits continue to form. Your baby will also start to produce something called “myelin.” This is a protective covering for his nerves which will continue to increase until the last month of pregnancy. Tips for Now: You will need all the pillows you can get to stay comfortable in bed as your belly grows, but one more addition can help you get a good night’s sleep: a full body pillow! Of course, another warm body beside you can serve in the same way, if they do not mind.
